The Fourth Trimester: Your Body Needs Support, Too
You’ve just accomplished one of the most extraordinary feats a human body can experience. Amidst the wonder, the sleep deprivation, the round-the-clock feeding, and the constant carrying, your body is quietly asking for care, too.
The fourth trimester is a genuine physiological transition. Whether your birth was vaginal or a caesarean, straightforward or complex, it was a massive physical event. Your pelvis has shifted, your relaxin-influenced ligaments remain lax, and your posture has been reshaped by pregnancy—and is now being re-molded by how you hold, nurse, and carry your baby. The nervous system, which operated on high alert through labor and delivery, needs time and targeted support to settle.
At Thriving Life Wellness Center in San Francisco, California, we offer gentle, specialized postpartum chiropractic care built specifically for this significant and demanding season of life. Having cared for many of you through pregnancy, we love nothing more than supporting your recovery post-birth so your body can realign, heal, and feel like home again.
How Soon Can I Come In?
Sooner than most people think.
For Uncomplicated Vaginal Births: We frequently welcome new mothers within the first one to two weeks postpartum—sometimes earlier if your symptoms are acute and you feel ready.
For Caesarean Births: We wait until your incision is healing well and has received formal clearance from your OB-GYN—typically four to six weeks. When you do come in, we begin very gently, working around and away from the scar tissue rather than placing direct pressure near it.
Unsure if you're ready? Give us a call. We will happily talk through the timing with you and your birth team to ensure you feel entirely comfortable.
What Postpartum Chiropractic Care Helps With
Breastfeeding & Bottle-Feeding Neck/Back Pain: The prolonged forward gaze, rounded shoulders, and static holding required for nursing strain the neck, upper back, and shoulders beyond what they were built for. We release deep-seated muscle tension and provide ergonomic positioning tips to protect you between visits.
Pelvic Realignment & Pelvic Floor Support: The pelvis doesn't always automatically snap back into alignment post-birth, especially following a long labor, instrumental delivery, or C-section. Gentle adjustments help the pelvis and sacrum find their stable balance. We proudly co-manage and coordinate care with San Francisco pelvic floor physical therapists when additional foundational support is needed.
Sacroiliac (SI) Joint & Hip Pain: A deep ache or sharp pain at the back of the pelvis that flares up when rising from a chair, climbing stairs, or walking. Gentle, targeted care for the SI joint relieves this deep-seated pregnancy and postpartum load.
C-Section Recovery: As a major abdominal surgery, C-sections require thoughtful rehabilitation. We focus on the lumbar spine, pelvis, and upper back that bear extra strain while the abdomen heals, alongside careful, low-impact soft tissue management once cleared by your doctor.
Postpartum Headaches & Neck Tension: Relieve the structural contributors to headache pain driven by hormonal shifts, sleep posture, upper cervical labor strain, and feeding ergonomics.
Rib Pain & Thoracic Restriction: Mid-back and rib cage tension frequently remains locked after a physically demanding labor—a treatable restriction many mothers don't realize can be resolved.
Sleep Position Pain: Address the deep-seated muscle and joint fatigue accumulated from fragmented sleep in unusual postures with a recovering body.
What to Expect During a Postpartum Visit at Thriving Life
Your first postpartum appointment always starts with a conversation—discussing your birth experience, recovery status, current discomforts, and personal goals. We conduct a thorough, gentle assessment before initiating any care.
Tailored Intensity: Early postpartum adjustments are much lighter and more focused than standard care. We check in at every single visit, adapting our approach as your body heals and strengthens.
Baby-Friendly Environment: Breastfeeding positions are accommodated with total comfort. Bringing your baby along is completely normal and welcomed here. If you need an unhurried, slightly longer appointment slot because newborn life requires flexibility, just let us know when booking
Caring for You, and Your Baby Too
New babies love chiropractic care just as much! The birth process is physically demanding for infants, too. Gentle paediatric chiropractic supports a newborn's developing nervous system, helps resolve feeding difficulties linked to neck and jaw tension, and addresses asymmetries stemming from womb positioning or birth mechanics.
Many of our San Francisco mamas bring their newborns right along to their own postpartum appointments for a gentle pediatric wellness check.
Integrated Collaborative Care in San Francisco
We believe true healing is collaborative. We actively co-manage care with local OB-GYNs, midwives, pelvic floor physical therapists, lactation consultants, and postnatal doulas across San Francisco and the wider Bay Area. If another specialized practitioner will accelerate your healing, we will connect you directly.

Sooner than many new mothers expect! For an uncomplicated vaginal birth, we frequently welcome mothers into the clinic within the first one to two weeks postpartum—sometimes even earlier if you are dealing with acute pain and feel ready. For a caesarean birth, we typically wait four to six weeks until your incision is healing well and has received formal clearance from your OB-GYN. When you do come in after a C-section, our approach is exceptionally gentle, focusing entirely on the pelvis and spine while staying well away from the scar tissue. If you are ever unsure whether your body is ready, just give us a call; we are always happy to talk through the timing with you and your birth team.
Yes, it is entirely safe when performed with appropriate timing, modifications, and gentle techniques. Because a caesarean section is major abdominal surgery, we ensure your obstetric team has cleared your recovery (usually around the four to six-week mark) before beginning care. Once you're cleared, we utilize low-force adjustments tailored to a healing body. We focus heavily on the lumbar spine, pelvis, and upper back—areas that bear significant structural strain while your abdomen heals—without ever placing direct or uncomfortable pressure on your surgical site.
Yes—in fact, nursing and bottle-feeding back pain is one of the most common reasons new mothers seek our care. The round-the-clock demands of feeding require hours of static holding, rounded shoulders, and looking downward, which quickly strains the neck, upper back, and shoulders. We treat the root structural restrictions and muscle tension accumulating from these daily demands. Alongside gentle adjustments, we provide practical ergonomic tips and feeding posture strategies to help you stay comfortable between visits.
Absolutely. During pregnancy, your body releases relaxin to loosen ligaments and widen the pelvis. After birth, that pelvis needs to find its way back to a stable, balanced foundation—and it doesn't always transition smoothly, especially after a long labor, instrumental delivery, or C-section. Gentle chiropractic care gently assists the pelvis and sacrum in returning to their optimal alignment. Furthermore, we actively co-manage care with local San Francisco pelvic floor physical therapists, happily referring you out if a collaborative approach will best support your full recovery.
Please do! We completely expect and warmly welcome your baby into our practice space. We know how difficult it can be to coordinate childcare in the fourth trimester, so please don't stress if your baby needs to feed, be held, or fuss during your visit. If you feel you need a little extra breathing room in your schedule because newborn life is unpredictable, just let us know when booking and we can block out a slightly longer appointment window for you.
Postpartum care is specifically calibrated to the unique physiological state of a body that has just experienced pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Your pelvic joints are still quite mobile, your ligaments remain lax, and your nervous system is working overtime to adapt to sleep deprivation and physical demands. Because of this, our postpartum techniques are much gentler, focus heavily on the pelvis and sacrum, and evolve visit by visit as your core strength and tissue healing progress.
